Okie from Muskogee" (1969) ; AMG review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine:
“ "Okie from Muskogee was quickly recorded to cash in on the success of the title song, which became a pop music sensation upon its release in the fall of 1969. Haggard & the Strangers went to Muskogee, OK, where they ran through a number of their hits and working-class anthems. The first side is devoted to classics like "Mama Tried," "Swinging Doors," "Sing Me Back Home," and "Workin' Man Blues," while the first part of the second side is devoted to songs about the mythological "Hobo Bill," before it concludes with rousing versions of "White Line Fever" and "Okie from Muskogee." While the record isn't necessary, it is a hell of a lot of fun and not bad evidence of why Hag was the most popular figure in country music at the end of the '60s. ”

"The Fightin' Side of Me" (1970) ; AMG review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine:
“ Like its predecessor, Okie from Muskogee, The Fightin' Side of Me was a rush-released live album designed to cash in on the success of his ultra-patriotic hit single of the same name. The Fightin' Side of Me was recorded live in Philadelphia, where Haggard drew a capacity crowd. The songs are a good representation of a typical Haggard concert from the early '70s: A classic hit opens the record ("I Take a Lot of Pride in What I Am"), followed by some selections from his recent records, a couple of songs from Bonnie Owens and the Strangers, a medley of other singers performed as imitations, and, finally, three recent hits -- including "Okie from Muskogee" and "The Fightin' Side of Me" -- to close the show. It's a fun record, and one that gives a better indication of what a typical Haggard concert was like in the early '70s, but it's ultimately a minor entry in his catalog.
